Remembering Oktoberfest in Munich

that tower is the tower of Paulaner Beer. They also had a beer tent here that can occupy thousands of people. On top of that tower is a rotating big mug..Oktoberfest is held every year in Theresienwiese in Munich. I could not imagine how many thousands of people are going here especially during the night (to drink and drink and drink beer..wink)

A History of Thanksgiving
http://www.randomhistory.com/2008/10/23_thanksgiving.html

Thanksgiving Day in the United States evokes a number of rich traditions, most notably the Thanksgiving Day feast. The food is, itself, a symbolic display with roots both in the New World’s early interaction between European settlers and indigenous people and in conventions that are more recent. In addition to the food, Thanksgiving calls to mind a range of traditions revolving around the family: parades, football, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, travel, and shopping, to name a few. In America, Thanksgiving’s modern uniqueness as a holiday lies in its somewhat less commercial identity between Halloween and Christmas.

The Thanksgiving Day holiday, however, is considered the official launch of the “Holiday Season,” as schools let out for a celebration that can be simultaneously deeply religious yet secular. To whomever thanks is given, Thanksgiving Day is a time designated for offering a word of thanks for the gifts of one’s life, no matter how troubling the times. Evolving from fast to feast, Thanksgiving Day’s origins are not clearly cut from the annals of American history.

Bavaria Statue in Munich

I visited this place during the yearly Oktoberfest..I was also on top of it seeing the view of the Oktoberfest..nice place and amazing work of art..a little info of Bavaria statue courtesy of Wikipedia..thanks for sharing this info..

The Bavaria statue (German just 'Bavaria') is a bronze-cast statue of a female figure representing Bavaria's "secular patron saint", the Tellus (Mater) Bavarica ("goddess of the land of Bavaria"), located at the border of the Theresienwiese in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, where the Oktoberfest takes place each September.

The statue was commissioned by Ludwig I of Bavaria, and the design chosen by a competition. When the architect Leo von Klenze, building the 'Ruhmeshalle' (Hall of Fame) in the background of the Bavaria, placed an order to build the statue, he thought about a Greek design, settled between an athena and an amazon. The sculptor Ludwig Schwanthaler changed the design to a more romantic Germanic look (no helmet, oak wreath instead of laurel wreath, bear-skin, lion and sword instead of spear). It is an allegoric personification of Bavaria's strength and glory.

The statue was built at the foundry of J.B. Stiglmair from 1844 until 1850, mainly by Stiglmair's nephew Ferdinand Von Miller. Since the Bavaria is one of the biggest bronze sculptures in the world, it had to be built out of four big parts and several smaller ones. It is 18.52 metres (60 ft 9 in) high and weighs about 87.36 tonnes [1] (96.2 tons).

Inside the statue, a staircase of 66 stairs allows tourists to climb to the top and view Munich from above.
