Canstatter Volksfest in Stuttgart

Another large festival in Germany is starting soon. The Cannstatter Volksfest is an annual three-week festival in Stuttgart, Germany. We were there last year and the it was quite an exciting visit for the first time. This festival is sometimes also referred by foreign visitors as the Stuttgart Beer Festival although it is actually more of an autumnal fair. The locals to Stuttgart simply call it Wasen.

Here are some information for this year’s festival

When: 23 September – 09 October, 2011
Where: district of Bad Cannstatt, near the river Neckar in Stuttgart.

For sure tons of liters of beers will be consumed again in this festival. This is so far the second largest fair in Germany after Oktoberfest.

these images were taken during our visit last October 2010.

The festival is opened by a ceremony in which the incumbent Lord Mayor of Stuttgart tries to tap the first barrel of beer with as few hits as possible. This takes place on a Friday in late September, so that the duration of the festival is actually 17 days.
