Celebrating Weiberfasching in Germany

Today is the celebration of Weiberfasching in Germany. No wonder, after my doctor’s visit today, as I went grocery shopping, most of the women in the stores I went into were wearing carnival costumes. The workers at the clinic were also wearing costumes of various kinds. I realized that the Fasching celebration in Germany is currently going on and today is the special celebration of carnival for women. If you want to know more about this celebration, feel free to click this link about Fasching in Germany.

If I have to literally translate Weiberfasching, “Weiber” means women and “Fasching” simply means carnival. Thus, today Thursday, is the celebration of women’s carnival.   I was watching awhile ago a German TV program that  shows a  Weiberfasching somewhere in the region of Nordrhein-Westfalen.. All  you can see  are women as audience except for the  performers who are entertaining these women inside a gym or  “Halle”.  Colorful carnival costumes of various kinds and styles are being worn by these women who are attending such  celebration.

Weiberfasching is usually celebrated before ash Wednesday.  People in Cologne call Weiberfasching as Wieverfastelovend while people from Koblenz call Schwerdonnerstag, Weiberfaasnet for people in Schwäbisch and AAchen call it Fettdonnerstag.

I have been to some of the carnival parades in  Bavaria, Germany. I  wish to witness the most famous  ones especially in Cologne, Mainz and Düsseldorf.

If you happen to visit Germany during carnival season, why not experience the various carnival celebrations in the different regions of the country. Enjoy but be safe!
