The Best of Bavaria

Bayern or Bavaria in English,  is the biggest  state   in Germany. For me, it is also the most beautiful  of all the 16 states  in this country.  There are a lot of  fantastic  sights and events  that take  place in Bavaria every year. Here are some of the  best in the region!

Oktoberfest in Munich

If you  want to witness  the biggest festival in the world, I would suggest that you start booking  now for your flights and hotels in  Munich. Bavaria's capital city is always flooded with locals and tourists from around the world during the Oktoberfest celebration.  This event is a very important part of Bavarian culture having been held since 1810. Around six million people are visiting this  festival every year.

Ladies wearing the Bavarian dress called Dirndl in Munich Oktoberfest. I was there thrice already!

Also take the chance to explore Munich city and its  surroundings. For sure, you will love it there and will enjoy your visit to one of the best destinations in Europe.

Neuschwanstein Castle

This fairy-tale castle  commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria has been a magnet  to tourists around the world. Neuschwanstein Castle was the inspiration for Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle. It is considered to be one of the most-photographed buildings in Germany. This palace has a Romanesque Revival architecture and is located on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria.

The Residence in Würzburg

It is listed in the the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1981, including its Court Gardens and Residence Square. The Residence in Würzburg has one of the finest Baroque architecture in Europe. No wonder it was dubbed  by Napoleon as  the "nicest parsonage in Europe".

The old city  of Wuerzburg is also  worth to explore. Don't miss the Old Main  Bridge and Fortress Marienberg in your sights to see.

The Alps in Bavaria, Germany

I can easily relate to the word Alps. You know why? When I was still young, I use to drink this milk named Alpine. With its wrapping, I always see the snow white-covered mountains. I was dreaming one day I will be able to see the Alps.

I am living now in Europe specifically in Bavaria, Germany. This part of Germany especially when you are in Allgäu, you can have a good view of the Alps. I can still remember my first vaction in Allgäu last August 2006. I can't forget that because it was my birthday vacation.

The Alps is one of the great mountain range systems of Europe, stretching from Austria and Slovenia in the east through Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany to France in the west. The highest mountain in the Alps is Mont Blanc, at 4,810.45 metres (15,782 ft), on the Italian–French border.

The Neuschwanstein Castle of King Ludwig II of Bavaria

I had already shared some images of the famous Neuschwanstein Castle of King Ludwig II, king of Bavaria, Germany. The images I am sharing here now were taken during my second visit with friends last November 2010.

Schloss Neuschwanstein, as it is called in German is a 19th century Neo-Gothic revival palace located on the hill of Hohenschwangau village near Füssen (written in English as Fuessen) in the state of Bavaria (Bayern), Germany. It was the inspiration for Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle.

It is said that this castle is one of the most photographed in Germany. It is visited by more than a million of visitors every year from the different parts of the globe.

you can find shops near tthe castle for souvenirs or snacks

the entrance to the castle. taken during our visit last November 2010.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE CASTLE

In 1868, the ruins of the medieval twin castles were demolished completely; the remains of the old keep were blown up. The foundation stone for the Palace was laid on September 5, 1869; in 1872 its cellar was completed and in 1876, everything up to the first floor. But the Gatehouse was finished first. At the end of the year 1873 it was completed and fully furnished, allowing Ludwig to take provisional lodgings there and observe the further construction work. In 1874, direction of the civil works passed from Eduard Riedel to Georg von Dollmann. The topping out ceremony for the Palas was in 1880, and in 1884, the king could move into the new building. In the same year the direction of the project passed to Julius Hofmann, after Dollmann had fallen in disgrace. more here

The Beautiful Church of Mariahilf in Freystadt, Upper Palatinate, Bavaria

Today is the celebration of Pfingstsonntag or Pentecost Sunday. We had a chance to go sightseeing in some small towns and villages in Upper Palatinate in Bavaria, Germany. One of the sights we visited was the Wallfahrtskirche Mariahilf which might be called in English as the Pilgrimage Church of Our Lady of Help. It is located in Freystadt.

Freystadt is a town in the district of Neumarkt in Bavaria, Germany. It is situated near the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal, 14 km southwest of Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz, and 33 km southeast of Nuremberg. This beautiful church is also called Freystadt's Baroque Heaven or the Upper Palatinates Baroque Gem. I was truly amazed as we went inside of it and saw the marvelous architecture and the amazing frescos on its ceiling. It was truly breathtaking! No wonder the frescos were painted by the famous German painter Hans Georg Asam (+1711) with his famous sons Egid Quirin (+1750) and Cosmas Damian (+1739). The church was built by architect named Giovanni Antonio Viscardi (+1713) in 1700-10. What a historical fact indeed.

Just watch these marvelous pictures we took during our sightseeing today. Thanks to hubby for taking pictures of me once again. We also visited nearby towns like Berching, Wissing, old city in Freystadt and some other more. What a wonderful day today especially in seeing this amazing architecture of the church.

The Befreiungshalle in Kellheim, Germany

Seeing different places in Germany is quite interesting. I always love history even before my school days. Knowing and seeing where history begin is such a nice feeling especially knowing those people who greatly contributed to human history. Today I am sharing photos about The Befreiungshalle in Kellheim.

This information below is thru the courtesy of Wikipedia..thanks a lot for this info!!

The Befreiungshalle ("Hall of Liberation") is an historical classical monument upon Mount Michelsberg above the city of Kelheim in Bavaria, Germany. It stands upstream of Regensburg on the river Danube at the confluence of the Danube and the Altmühl, i.e. the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal.

HISTORY

King Ludwig I of Bavaria ordered the Befreiungshalle to be built in order to commemorate the victories against Napoleon during the Wars of Liberation that lasted from 1813 to 1815. The construction was started in 1842 by Friedrich von Gärtner in a mixture of classical and Christian styles. At the behest of the King, Leo von Klenze altered the plans and completed the building in 1863. The ceremonial opening took place on October 18, 1863 - the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Nations (Völkerschlacht) near Leipzig.

The following dictum by King Ludwig I, embedded into the marble floor, commemorates the occasion of the construction of the Befreiungshalle:

MOECHTEN
DIE TEUTSCHEN
NIE VERGESSEN WAS
DEN BEFREIUNGSKAMPF
NOTHWENDIG MACHTE
UND WODURCH SIE
GESIEGT.
(May
the Germans
never forget what
made necessary
the Struggle for Freedom
and by what means they
won.)

Nürnberg, Germany

Nürnberg or commonly known as Nuremberg in English is one of the visited cities in Germany. It is very famous of its Christkindlemarkt (Christmas Market) which is held around the end of November until Dec. 24 (not so sure but I think so..will rasearch it later)..I had been to this city not only ten time. If I get bored sometimes, I even go walking here alone, do shopping, picture taking, eat in my favorite Chinese restaurant or just simply enjoying the sightseeing.

We were also here last Saturday with friends. We had lots of fun walking around and shopping too!! I am sharing to you some photos I had last Dec. 2007 as me and my husband went their during the Chriskindlemarkt. I will share some more photos and infos about Nuremberg next time....see yah folks!! thanks for visiting!!

Nuremberg Castle is located on a sandstone rock in the north of the historical city of Nuremberg, Germany. It comprises three parts: the Emperor's buildings ("Kaiserburg"), the mostly built buildings of the rulers of Nuremberg ("Burggrafenburg"), and the buildings on the eastern side ("städtische Burganlage"). The castle was damaged in the Second World War but then reconstructed; today it is one of the main landmarks in Nuremberg. courtesy of Wikipedia.

as we were going down from the castle.it's freezing cold here..
photo I took as we where on top of the Castle. You can see here the view of the city

Nuremberg (German: Nürnberg ['nʏɐ̯nbεɐ̯k]) is a city in the German state of Bavaria, in the administrative region of Middle Franconia. It is situated on the Pegnitz river and the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal and is Franconia's largest city. It is located about 170 kilometres north of Munich, at 49.27° N 11.5° E. Population (as of 01/2006) is 500,132.

From 1050 to 1571, the city expanded and rose dramatically in importance due to its location on key trade routes. It is often referred to as having been the 'unofficial capital' of the Holy Roman Emperor, particularly because Reichstage (Imperial Diets) and courts met at Nuremberg Castle. The Diets of Nuremberg were an important part of the administrative structure of the empire. In 1219 Nuremberg became an Imperial Free City under Emperor Frederick II. Nuremberg soon became, with Augsburg, one of the two great trade centers on the route from Italy to Northern Europe. In 1298, the Jews of the town were accused of having desecrated the host and 698 were slain in one of the many Rintfleisch Massacres. Behind the massacre in 1298 was also the desire to combine the northern and southern parts of the city, which were divided by the Pegnitz River. Jews had been settled in that flood-prone area, but as the city leaders realized, this center of town was crucial to its future development. Hence, the Jewish population had to be removed. This area is now the place of the City Market, Frauenkirche and Rathaus (City Hall).
